Ming Yi, Brightness Hiding is the Dark Sun, the sun in the earth and the sacrifice to the dark powers at the Earth Altar. It represents the World of the Dead and mourning, the Demon Country and traveling among the barbarians. It portrays someone who is outcast, marginalized, proscribed, exiled from the centers of culture and power. A central image here is solar eclipse, amongst others the eclipse at Feng that signaled King Wu’s receipt of the Mandate of Heaven when he was hiding in the Mourning Hut to lament the death of his father King Wen. The eclipse signifies both accepting a difficult task and the spirit’s help in this hardship, evoked by the series of heroes in the transforming lines of the figure: Yi the Archer in the Demon Country, shooting the three-legged crow that is eating the sun; Yu the Great taming the demons through his endurance of toil and hardship; King Wen imprisoned by the Shang tyrant, creating the Book of Changes in his cell; King Wu who set his armies marching to overthrow oppression; Jizi who endured hardship at the court of the tyrant, a voice in the wilderness. Accepting the hardship implied here, the omen bird calling from the darkness, will bring deliverance and the new day.
