Guai, Deciding and Parting refers to making an oracular message or pronouncement known or notifying the Ancestor at the Earth Altar of an important move: war, seasonal change or the arrival of an important spirit. It includes the idea of parting with the past through the image of rivers separating and of a decisive moment, a critical time for a breakthrough. The root of the term shows a thimble worn by archers who shoot through openings in armor or formations in battle. It includes a loan word for skipping, running, galloping animals that suggests moving quickly from one place or state of mind to another. The figure centers on signals and words: a messenger announcing the results of an oracle, raising a banner or war axe. It suggests bringing something dangerous to light, opening and cleansing a wound and a critical announcement in the King’s court.
