Feng, Abounding suggests a heng or image-fixing ritual. This heng-ritual was celebrated at the height of summer, when the year changes at the solstice. The King would withdraw into the Mourning Hut to fix the forms of coming abundance by sacrificing to the dark forces that bring the harvest. This also suggests playing the war tambours and calling the armies that become active in autumn after the harvest. It represents offerings that bring happiness, wine-drinking feasts and the wine vessel used at the Outskirts Altar, full of blessings. The root is pig, symbolizing riches. Feng is also the name of King Wu’s military capital, built on the Feng River. When King Wu was in the Mourning Hut beginning the three years of isolation prescribed for a royal ancestor a solar eclipse occurred. The sky became dark and the Bin or Dipper, the palace of Shang Di, the High Lord, appeared in the heavens. King Wu took this as a direct omen from Heaven that he had finally received the Mandate for Change. He made a turtle divination to see if he should remain in mourning or take up arms. The oracle responded: “Perhaps stay in mourning? Trap! The Way closes!” King Wu made the yi-sacrifice and set the armies marching to fight the battle that ended the rule of the Shang and ushered in abundance for all.
Spring (55): Rouse new growth by spreading abundance to all. Do not stay in isolation. Seize the opportunity. Don’t be afraid to act alone.
Summer (30): Ripen the fruits by evaluating your motives and feelings. Be very careful. Don’t get trapped by the past.
