64 Not Yet Crossing WEI JI

}

Not Yet Crossing. Make an offering and you will succeed.
The Small Fox is on the muddy bank.
If she soaks her tail, there is no advantageous direction.

Gather energy for a major change. Consider the situation carefully. Clearly differentiate roles, goals and resources. Beware of lack of confidence or a critical attitude. Keep your eyes open. Distinguish the signs of the time and move with them. Adapt to the flow.

The Image
The old characters show a luxuriant tree, its fruit not yet ripe, a flowing river and a shallow place where a river can be crossed.

Circle of Meanings
Poised at the entrance, on the edge of a major change; gather your energy, prepare the new time, ready yourself to embark on the journey; season when the fruits ripen; everything is possible if you wait for the right moment; the voyage of life. Containing your fear and impulse now lets you find real directions in life.  Heart Theme: 63 the ongoing process of change.

Spirit Helpers
Fire over Ghost River. Middle Daughter and Middle Son, the Visionary and the Navigator, create brightness to encourage new directions. Prepare yourself for a decisive new move. Gather your energy and resources. The possibilities are great. Be sure your plans are in order and that you accumulate enough energy to make the crossing without getting stuck. If you fail in the crossing you would have nowhere to go and nothing you do would help you. Be like the Small Fox who waits for the right time, tries each step carefully and can change quickly when necessary. Consider and distinguish things very carefully. There are hidden forces at work that are moving you into the right position.

Voice of the Mothers
Gather energy for the decisive new move. Accumulate energy and prepare yourself. Containing your fear and impulse now lets you find real directions in life. Stay hidden and preserve your innate power (12). Do not focus on inspiring others (1).

Wei Ji, Not yet Crossing, is part of a group of four figures (1 and 2, 63 and 64) that form the Four Gates of Change, places where the Hidden Winds of the Four Directions enter the human world. The Pair is made up of Fire and Water in maximum integration and suggests all the metaphors of cooking and transforming, a continual creative relation to the process of Change. The Small Fox, a crafty shape-changing animal at home in the dream world presides over this process which is also imaged as a campaign into the Demon Country. The key term ji or crossing means to cross a river at a ford. It suggests the souls and spirits entering the Great Stream, a metaphor for the voyage of life and is the name of one of the four Great Rivers: Crossing the Ji is a metaphor for going to the River-Mountain Festival and for a bride being taken to her husband’s ancestral home. Crossing suggests realizing or achieving something, helping, aiding or rescuing. It adds what is lacking and represents an understanding of what is useful and profitable. Not Yet Crossing means that we are preparing to make a major move or transition. We are on the riverbank, gathering the force to cross, preparing the food. This is the world of potential, the season when the fruits ripen. The term suggests the tree on the Earth Altar and the necessity to offer preparatory sacrifices and make ritual announcements. We are poised at the entrance, readying ourselves to embark on the birth into the spirit, the great enterprise of being that can never be exhausted.

Fall (64): Harvest the crop by letting the past dissolve. Celebrate your accomplishments. You have a great connection. Start slowly and join with others. This can begin a great new time.
Winter (40): Find the seed of the new by freeing creative energy from past patterns. Be vigorous. Talk to your most trusted advisors. You are in exactly the right position. Put things in order even if you have to move slowly.
Spring (54): Rouse new growth by leaving the old ways behind. Stay in your new group. Seek real alliances. Let yourself be led. Things may look dangerous, but have no fear. Everything you want is there.
Summer (38): Ripen the fruits. Do not worry over what seems gone. It will return by itself.  Don’t take chances. Stay clear and connected.

Inner World

Step 1 Beginnings: This return of the spirit attracts a new fate.
Soaking your tail. Distress.
You have let yourself fall into the river of past pain. Why go on like this? You have the spirit and intelligence to carry all before you. Realize that you are facing the hateful people within yourself and do not let them poison you. If you bring this to completion harmony will return of itself. These goings and comings release energy bound in the past. Co-operate with the on-going process of change. (38 Diverging)

Step 2 Inner Center: This inner re-organization leads to harmony with others.
Braking his wheels. Trailing her cord in the water.
Wise Words! Trial: The Way opens.
Everything is loaded but do not start yet. Let yourself be lured into action. The sincerity of your feeling and your dedication are what count. You have to pretend to be part of this situation even as it is falling all around you. Restrain your eager desires for fame and recognition. These goings and comings will release the energy now bound up in the past. Gather yourself for a decisive new move. (35 Flourishing)

Step 3 Threshold: This inner re-balancing lets you make your way in life.
Chastising closes the Way.
Advantageous to step into the Great Stream.
Do not try to discipline people or set out on an expedition. What you are doing now will bring all you want. You are in the middle of an important passage. Do not relax yet. Be resolute and part from the past. You are connected to a creative force. (50 The Vessel)

Outer World

Step 4 Arrival: This inner preparation leads to what is greater.
Trial: The Way is open. Wise Words! The cause of sorrow disappears.
The Shake subjugates the Demon Country.
In three years there will be celebrations in the great city.
Arouse your energy and let go of the past. You are embarked on a great enterprise. If you simply follow old desires and impulses now you will be lost. Do not confine your youthful spirit in the prison of outmoded desires and thoughts. This will take time to complete but you will win in the end. Something significant is returning. Be open and provide what is needed. (4 Enveloping)

Step 5 Outer Center: This inner re-grouping lets your real purpose shine.
Trial: The Way is open. Without a cause for sorrow.
This is the Realizing Person’s shining.

Step 6 Culmination: This inner stripping leads to a breakthrough.
There is a connection to the spirits through drinking spirits.
This is not a mistake. Soak your head.
There is a connection to the spirits in letting go of what is past.
You have a great connection but start slowly. Let yourself be lured on. Difficulties are going, praise and ease are coming. Pull back and join with others and you will capture the force opposing your plans and desires. There is nothing that will not benefit. These goings and comings release the energy now bound up in the past. Cooperate with the on-going process of change. (40 Deliverance/Liberating)
